STRENGTH THROUGH DIVERSITY
Unique hotels with character and style in the heart of Copenhagen – that’s what Arp-Hansen Hotel Group has stood for over the past 50 years. The strategy is clear: it’s all about boutique individuality.
Our charming hotels, each featuring individual and design-conscious décor, are located at the best addresses in Copenhagen. And unlike other hotel chains, we do not follow the typical hotel formula in which a standardised appearance worldwide ensures synergy for the chain.
Our way of thinking is quite the opposite: We have deliberately sidestepped a streamlined experience in favour of diversity. At Arp-Hansen Hotel Group, we cultivate the unique character of each individual hotel, its surroundings, and its historical background – all of which are reflected in the design.
There is a rising demand for original experiences. Consumers today seek to express their individuality through their choice of travel destination and accommodation, which is why our personalised hotel collection enjoys ever-greater demand.
Arp-Hansen Hotel Group offers accommodation to suit every taste and travel budget, whether you are seeking the luxury of a heritage royal lodge, dreaming of the canalside romance of Nyhavn Canal with its old wooden schooners, or crave the amenities of an ultramodern hotel with panoramic skyline views.
Arp-Hansen Hotel Group was founded in 1960 by master builder Alf Arp-Hansen. With the acquisition of Gentofte Inn in suburban Copenhagen he started what has today become the city’s largest hotel chain. After extensive refurbishment, Gentofte Hotel reopened in 1961, ready to welcome its first guests. The founder then embarked on rapid expansion at several locations in the capital. A disused spice warehouse from 1804 by Nyhavn Canal was his next big project. Superbly converted into Copenhagen’s first waterside warehouse hotel, 71 Nyhavn Hotel opened in 1971 and found an instant following among Danish and foreign travellers alike.
A few years later, the innovative hotelier was charmed by a historic building from 1869. Situated just behind the Royal Danish Theatre, the name, Hotel Opera, was an obvious choice. With three hotels in the portfolio, the Arp-Hansen name now became synonymous with individually designed boutique hotels, all of which were distinctive establishments with attractive locations.
In 1986, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group expanded again – this time with no less than two centrally located acquisitions: Hotel Christian IV in Dronningens Tværgade and Grand Hotel in Vesterbrogade. Hotel Christian IV was leased to another operator in 2004 and Grand Hotel in October 2017.
Five years later, in 1991, we acquired the historic Hotel Phoenix Copenhagen in Bredgade. Dating back to the 1700s, the establishment enjoyed a golden era as the preferred destination of country aristocracy and as a royal guest lodge for foreign princes. The attractive hotel is known for its many artworks, not least those from our considerable collection of paintings from the Danish Golden Age.
The enterprising master builder passed away in 1998, leaving one of Denmark’s largest and most celebrated hotel chain. His two sons, Henning and Birger Arp-Hansen, took over the family business and two years after the death of the founder, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group inaugurated Copenhagen Strand in a historic waterfront building from 1869, which had originally housed a paper mill and a box manufacturer.
Three years later, in 2003, the dream of opening a hotel by Copenhagen’s City Hall Square finally came true. The Square is a design hotel aimed at travellers who feel at home in the heart of a buzzing metropolis and who prefer to explore the city’s rich variety of restaurants rather than enjoy all their meals at the hotel, which consequently doesn’t offer evening dining.
The very next year, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group acquired Imperial Hotel near Vesterport Station, which has since undergone interior remodelling in a contemporary style and features an entire floor, including a number of Executive Rooms, inspired by the 1950s retro look made famous by the popular Mad Men television series. Indeed, design is a central throughline of the modern Imperial Hotel.
In the summer of 2006, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group entered a whole new era with our first newly constructed hotel, Copenhagen Island, designed by the renowned Danish architect Kim Utzon. As the name implies, the hotel is constructed on its very own manmade island by the Copenhagen waterfront.
In 2010, the flagship of our portfolio of contemporary hotels opened for business. The Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center, also skilfully designed by Kim Utzon, pleases the eye with a combination of pure-lined Scandinavian modernism and vivid night-time exterior illuminations.
The hotel is contemporary and spectacular, offering luxurious amenities and interiors that speak to the imagination. As the name suggests, the hotel is inspired by one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, the magical universe of the nearby Tivoli Gardens.
In 2009, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group introduced a new standard for budget hotels, offering an innovative and uniquely affordable concept.
The first Wakeup Copenhagen was constructed in Carsten Niebuhrs Gade. And the second followed in 2014 at the downtown location of Borgergade. Our vision is clear: our guests are to enjoy the best of consummate design, central location and wallet-friendly rates. The concept has found a following and is today a success.
The hotels are designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Kim Utzon and our close collaboration with the architect has over the years ensured that our clear goals have been met in relation to these hotels. For not only are the two Wakeup Copenhagen hotels within walking distance of such attractions as the city’s main pedestrian street “Strøget”, Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen’s City Hall Square, the Kongens Nytorv Square and Nyhavn Canal, they are also functional and represent excellent design.
When staying at our Wakeup Copenhagen hotels, guests enjoy a three or four-star experience at the price of two-star hotel. The 12-15 m2 rooms are sleekly appointed, have flat-screen TVs and offer free WiFi. Here, you’ll enjoy ample opportunity to relax after a long day exploring the streets of Copenhagen.
With the Wakeup Copenhagen hotels, we continue to pursue our simple yet clear philosophy of hotel-keeping: To give our guests as well as our employees unique hotels at extremely good locations.
Since July 2015, Danish as well as foreign guests have been welcomed at our new and luxurious Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center. In close cooperation with the international architect Kim Utzon and Tivoli Design Team, we have created a new 12-storey hotel with 282 new well-appointed rooms in the new amusement park design. The new hotel is a natural and integral part of the popular Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center – decorated in Tivoli spirit and not only with excellent offerings for the many business travellers, but also for the families seeking a hotel stay. The hotel is centrally located and is ideal for combining business with pleasure. With walking distance, there is ample opportunity to experience the best that Copenhagen has to offer.
Guests at the new Tivoli Hotel can now enjoy their exclusive breakfast in our new Tivoli View Restaurant on the 11th floor while taking in the magnificent views over the Copenhagen skyline. The same backdrop and view can be enjoyed by diners at the new and exclusive restaurant on the 12th floor, MASH Penthouse where, atop the new Tivoli Hotel, our guests can enjoy tasty and masterfully prepared steaks. In keeping with the goal of Arp-Hansen Hotel Group to provide guests with the perfect hotel experience, MASH Penthouse presents guests with the ultimate taste and sensory experience. At MASH, there is attention to detail and an uncompromising commitment to quality ingredients. MASH Penthouse is an exciting and exclusive addition to the other restaurants in the hotel.
The new hotel extension is part of our original plan for the area, known as Kalvebod Brygge. Our vision of creating a congress and hotel complex of excellence has now fully materialised. We are dedicated to offering our guests the best of the best, which is why the new hotel also features 38 meeting and conference rooms, all elegantly decorated and fitted with high-quality technical equipment. The full complex now provides meeting facilities that can accommodate up to 6,000 guests.
We are also committed to offering our business visitors a pleasant and productive stay. And with a brand new congress reception we ensure that the congress centre’s meeting planners can guide guests with ease and elegance to enjoy a good start on their event. Our international guests can also look forward to a special reception service. As early as 1 April 2015, we launched Tivoli Hotel’s new Welcome China program that aims to provide our guests travelling from China an enhanced welcome with the added convenience of Chinese-speaking hosts.
On 1 January 2016, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group bid farewell to a family member. After having been in the family’s ownership since the 1970s, Hotel Opera in central Copenhagen has embarked on a new journey. It was with sadness and yet great conviction that this was the right course for the venerable hotel that Arp-Hansen Hotel Group sent off Hotel Opera on new adventures.
In 2017, we expanded with our third Wakeup Copenhagen hotel in Denmark’s second-largest city, Aarhus, where low prices go hand-in-hand with stylish design and a central location. The new hotel is adjacent to Bruun’s Galleri shopping centre and just a few minutes’ walk from Aarhus Central Station. The 312 rooms are designed in accordance with the two existing Wakeup hotels in Copenhagen, that is, with the best Danish design furniture, free Wi-Fi and flatscreen TV. The hotel measures up to many of the city’s 3 and 4-star hotels, but at 2-star rates.
In recent years, Aarhus has emerged as an exciting cultural and tourist destination and now further temptation has arrived with a cascade of Michelin stars awarded to a number of local restaurants. The new Wakeup Copenhagen hotel is a stylish and inexpensive alternative to private accommodation or for those who would have otherwise chosen to drive home after a visit to the City of Smiles.
