The Arp-Hansen Hotel Group with its 12 hotels and 3187 rooms is the larg¬est hotel provider in Copenhagen, accounting for every fifth hotel room in the city. Unlike much of the rest of the hotel market, the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group has opted out of the standardised formula for international hotel chains. Rather than offering a streamlined experience, the Arp-Hansen Group nurtures the boutique character and history of each hotel and its unique surroundings, all of which is reflected in the marketing.

A history of new and old

The Arp-Hansen Hotel Group was founded in 1960 by master builder Alf Arp-Hansen. With the acquisition of Gentofte Inn he started what has today become Copenhagen’s largest hotel collection. After extensive refurbish¬ment, Gentofte Hotel reopened in 1961, ready to welcome the first guests. The founder then embarked on opening new hotels at several locations in the capital. A disused spice warehouse from 1804 by Nyhavn Canal was his next big project. Superbly converted into the city’s first waterside ware¬house hotel, 71 Nyhavn Hotel opened in 1971 and found an instant following among Danish and foreign travellers alike. 

A few years later, the innovative hotelier was charmed by a historic build¬ing from 1869. Nestled next to the Royal Danish Theatre, the name, Hotel Opera, was an obvious choice. With three hotels in the portfolio, the Arp-Hansen name now became synonymous with individually designed boutique hotels in distinct and attractively located premises.

In 1986, the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group expanded again – this time with no less than two centrally located acquisitions: Hotel Christian IV located on Dronningens Tværgade and Grand Hotel on Vesterbrogade. And while Hotel Christian IV was leased to another operator in 2004, Grand Hotel from 1890 is still part of the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group collection. Following recent replenishment, the hotel has today regained its position as one of the city’s great classic hotels.

Five years later, in 1991, the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group acquired the historic Hotel Phoenix Copenhagen in Bredgade. Dating back to the 1700s, the hotel enjoyed a golden era as the preferred destination of country aristocra¬cy and as a royal guest lodge for foreign princes. Following comprehensive restoration, the hotel has been reborn, as the name implies, as an attractive luxury hotel adorned with artworks, not least those from Alf Arp-Hansen’s considerable collection of paintings from the Danish Golden Age.

From father to sons

In 1998, the enterprising master builder passed away, having founded one of Denmark’s largest and most celebrated hotel chains. His two sons, Henning and Birger Arp-Hansen, took over the family business and two years after the death of the founder, the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group inaugurated Copen¬hagen Strand Hotel in a historic waterfront building from 1869, which had originally housed a paper mill and a box manufacturer. 

Three years later, in 2003, the dream of opening a hotel by Copenhagen City Hall Square finally came to fruition. The Square is a design hotel aimed at travellers that feel at home in the heart of a buzzing metropolis and who prefer to explore Copenhagen’s rich variety of restaurants rather than enjoy meals at the hotel, which consequently doesn’t offer evening dining. 

The following year, Hotel Imperial by Vesterport Station was acquired, which has since undergone interior remodelling in a contemporary style and features an entire floor, including a number of Executive Rooms, inspired by the 1950s retro look of the Mad Men TV series. Design permeates this classic hotel in every respect, whose other floors are appointed by next-generation design talents.

A magic world

In the summer of 2006, the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group entered a whole new era with its first newly constructed hotel, Copenhagen Island, which is designed by the renowned Danish studio Kim Utzon Architects. As the name implies, the hotel is constructed on its very own manmade island by the Copenhagen waterfront. In 2010, the flagship of Arp-Hansen’s collection of contemporary hotels opened for business. The themed Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center, also designed by Kim Utzon Architects, pleases the eye with a combination of pure-lined Scandinavian modernism and vivid night¬time exterior illuminations. 

The hotel is contemporary and spectacular, offering luxurious amenities and interiors that speak to the imagination. As the name suggests, the hotel is inspired by one of the world’s oldest amusement parks, the magical universe of the nearby Tivoli Gardens.

New wallet-friendly concept

In 2009, Arp-Hansen introduced a new standard for low-cost hotels, offering an innovative and uniquely affordable concept.Designed by Kim Utzon Architects, Wakeup Copenhagen is centrally located in Copen-hagen’s waterside district of Kalvebod Brygge. Ensuring the success of the concept is the combination of consummate design and walking distance to attractions such as the city’s pedestrian zone, Tivoli Gardens and Copen-hagen’s City Hall Square.

In the summer of 2014, the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group is set to inaugurate a second Wakeup Copenhagen, this time located in Borgergade close to one of Copenhagen’s central squares, Kongens Nytorv, and to Nyhavn Canal and the city’s main pedestrian street, Strøget. Guests will once again be welcomed to a hotel conceived by Kim Utzon Architects, featuring 12-15 m2 rooms appointed with designer furniture, flat-screen TVs and offering free wireless internet. The hotel meets the standards of the city’s 3 and 4-star hotels, but offers favourable rates at a 2-star level.

A little extra pampering

In 2014, the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group will not only see the opening of a splendidly designed modern hotel, new benefits will also be introduced for loyal customers. 

Corporate members and members of the Arp-Hansen loyalty program will from January to April 2014 enjoy a little extra pampering during their stay. The Arp-Hansen Hotel Group will treat its loyalty program members to a new concept called Restaurant Voucher. Upon check-in guests will receive a voucher worth DKK 200 per room per night. At the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group, guests always take centre stage. So naturally, it will be up toindividual guests how to redeem their vouchers, whether for culinary experiences at one of the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group’s fine restaurants, for breakfast, roomservice, minibar or the bar.
