Master builder Alf Arp-Hansen founded Arp-Hansen Hotel Group in 1960. With the acquisition of Gjentofte Kro (Inn), he established what has today become Copenhagen’s largest hotel chain. Gjentofte Kro was transformed into Gentofte Hotel and later, in 1971, Alf Arp-Hansen also opened 71 Nyhavn Hotel – Copenhagen’s first warehouse hotel – that found an instant following among domestic travellers and foreign tourists alike.

Since then, a sweeping transformation has taken place of 71 Nyhavn Hotel. One of the two warehouses that constitute 71 Nyhavn Hotel – the red warehouse – was the first to undergone extensive refurbishment with a unique blend of elegant comfort, understated elegance and humble respect for the building’s 200-year-old history. Then the other section – the yellow warehouse – was renewed with great respect for the hotel’s unique historical character. The amazing warehouse hotel by Nyhavn Canal is today a true gem.

After this, the beautiful Hotel Opera opened (divested in 2015) in a historic building from 1869, located behind the Danish Royal Theatre. In 1986, Hotel Christian IV, located in Dronningens Tværgade, joined the hotel chain, followed by Grand Hotel in Vesterbrogade (divested in 2017). Five years later – in 1991 – Arp-Hansen Hotel Group assumed ownership of the his¬toric Phoenix Copenhagen in Bredgade, dating back to the 1700s.

Phoenix Copenhagen originally enjoyed a golden era as the preferred destination of the landed gentry and as a royal guest lodge for foreign princes. The attractive luxury hotel is famed for its romantic royal atmosphere as well as its considerable collection of paintings from the Danish Golden Age. 

All rooms and Junior Suites were refurbished in 2017. Phoenix Copenhagen’s celebrated charm has been preserved, while the rooms have been given a more extravagant look. Emphasis has been placed on luxury with the use of elegant materials in bright and comfortable colors, bridging new and old with the best of both worlds.

From father to sons

Alf Arp-Hansen founded what today is considered one of Denmark’s largest and most highly recognised hotel chains. In the 1970s, his sons, Henning and Birger Arp-Hansen, assumed a share of the family business. In 1998 the sons inherited full ownership. Two years later, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group inaugurated Copenhagen Strand Hotel, which is located in Havnegade in a former harbour-side warehouse from 1869 that originally housed a paper mill and a box manufacturer.

Copenhagen Strand was refurbished in 2017 and the newly decorated rooms reflect Nordic design and are inspired by light and water as well as a Danish sense of “hygge”. All interior elements are specially handpicked for their discreet luxury, stylish touch and added comfort.

In 2003, the dream of opening a hotel on Copenhagen’s most prestigious plaza – City Hall Square – finally came to fruition with the inauguration of The Square. The design hotel appeals to travellers seeking a home in the heart of Copenhagen who also prefer to explore the city’s rich palette of restaurants rather than enjoying all their meals at the hotel, which consequently does not offer evening dining.

The year after, Imperial Hotel near Vesterport Station was acquired. The hotel has since undergone interior remodelling and features an entire floor – including several Executive rooms – inspired by the 1950s retro-look made famous by the popular “Mad Men” television series.

An imaginative world

In the summer of 2006, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group entered a new era with the construction of its first new hotel, Copenhagen Island, which was designed by the renowned Danish architect Kim Utzon and located on a man-made island by the Copenhagen waterfront at Kalvebod Brygge.

Light, air and glass is the common thread in the hotel. You will experience that theme as soon as you step into the foyer, since it is framed by a seven-floor glass tower, decorated by high-gloss surfaces. You will be met with plenty inflows of light at the hotel. 

Another architectural brainchild of Kim Utzon, the nearby Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center opened in 2010. Considered Arp-Hansen Hotel Group’s flagship hotel, the impressive and exceptional structure is architecturally stringent yet also expresses a vivid sense of verve. The hotel is extremely stylish and offers luxurious amenities, such as a large pool and fitness studio, stunning views, suites with impressive views, and classy gourmet restaurants. These include the spectacular Tivoli View Restaurant on the 11th floor with views to the Copenhagen skyline, the Sticks’n’Sushi restaurant and MASH Penthouse on the 12th floor.

Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center additionally offers a number of luxury meeting and conference rooms, all elegantly decorated and featuring the latest technical equipment. The meeting facilities offer a total capacity for 5,500 guests. A special congress lobby allows convention and meeting centre planners to easily and elegantly guide participants to a good start. 

Tivoli Congress Hall is Copenhagen’s most beautiful congress hall filled with amazing associations with the Tivoli Gardens. The Congress Hall seats up to 2,400 delegates and is designed to easily adapt to all kinds of events. The hall is multi-functional and can be used for exhibitions, parties, concerts, fashion shows, general meetings and conferences.

Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center also takes good care of travellers from China and offers reassurance through providing printed communication and signage in Chinese.

Arp-Hansen Hotel Group introduced a new level for value-for-money hotels in 2009, offering an innovative and uniquely affordable accommodation concept. The first Wakeup Copenhagen hotel opened in Carsten Niebuhrs Gade and was followed in 2014 by the Borgergade property. In 2017, the Wakeup concept was introduced in Denmark’s second-largest city, Aarhus, where it enjoys a location next to the Bruun’s Gallery shopping centre a short stroll from the city’s central station. In 2019, the fourth Wakeup Copenhagen hotel – this time in Copenhagen again – opened on the corner of Bernstorffsgade and Kalvebod Brygge. At this hotel, guests can enjoy their breakfast on the 10th floor with an exceptional 360-degree view of the city.

The Wakeup Copenhagen hotels are smart, cool and minimalist – and have a clear vision of offering guests the best combination of stylish design, central location and affordable room rates. Although the prices match those of a standard 2-star hotel, guests enjoy a 3 to 4-star experience.
